substance in which very small particles or droplets (not visible to the human eye) of another substance are suspended. Basic colloids are either suspensions, consisting of a solid dispersed in a liquid; emulsions, consisting of tiny droplets of one liquid dispersed in another liquid but not mixed to form a solution; or foams, consisting of small gas bubbles in a liquid.
