Michael’s Bakery in Hillmorton, Christchurch won the supreme award in Baking New Zealand’s 2026 Hot Cross Bun Contest, topping a field of 49 entries. Judges highlighted the bun’s standout citrus aroma and flavour, thanks to mixed peel and fruit “conditioned” in an orange-flavoured liqueur, alongside a rich, traditional dough made with plenty of New Zealand butter and eggs.
The judging panel—three industry bakers plus Seven Sharp presenter Hilary Barry—was unanimous on the winner, with scoring weighted to flavour (50%), then visual appeal and technical skill (25% each).
Wellington’s Nada Bakery placed second, while Auckland favourite Daily Bread took third. Entries were assessed at room temperature and without butter, so each bun had to impress on taste, texture, and presentation alone.
