German for large flat tart or gateau. Great variety but generally made using layers of sponge enriched with creams, chocolate, fruit, nuts, marzipan or liqueurs. Contain very little or no flour, using ground nuts or bread crumbs instead. Usually divided into several similarly decorated portions. May be sold as a whole or as individual portions. Torten or tortes (plural).
