crisp, dark and very aromatic biscuits made from a short paste containing large amounts of sugar, to which spices such as cinnamon, cloves, coriander and cardamom are added. Almond speculaas have roughly grated almonds added as a base, while butter speculaas contain only butter fat or pure butter as opposed to other types of fats or shortenings.
