made from batter fried on a hotplate. Can be circular or square in shape, about 9 cm across and 2 cm high. Soft, chewy and moist. Upper surface looks like a honeycomb. Traditionally served for afternoon tea with butter and jam, now commonly eaten as a snack or at breakfast or brunch. May have savoury toppings that are grilled. Differ from pancakes in that they always have a leavener and do not contain eggs or fat.
